The novel is set during World War II and tells the story of a French lawyer who trades his wealth for his life when he is chosen by lot to be executed by the Germans. He then returns to his former house as a servant and falls in love with the sister of the man who died in his place. The novel explores the themes of guilt, redemption, identity, and love. The novel was first published in 1985 by The Bodley Head and Anthony Blond and has 158 pages.
