South of the Border, West of the Sun is a 1992 novel by Haruki Murakami, a popular contemporary Japanese writer and translator. It tells the story of Hajime, a man who has a happy and successful life with his wife and two daughters, but who is haunted by his past love for Shimamoto, a mysterious woman who reappears in his life after many years. The novel explores the themes of nostalgia, regret, and identity, as Hajime struggles to choose between his present and his past12 The novel was translated from the Japanese by Philip Gabriel and published by The Harvill Press in 1999.
